50-50

50-50 is probably one of my all-time favourite movies. Not many movies can accomplish the seriousness of a topic like cancer and add a comedic twist. 50-50 follows the life of Adam, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his friend Kyle, played by Seth Rogen and how they cope when Adam is diagnosed with spinal cancer. Kyle is a great friend throughout the film, but in order to cope with his friend’s illness he makes jokes about it. This is an interesting concept since for the most part people don’t relate Cancer with comedy. However, 50-50 is able to execute this unusual paring seamlessly. As the movie progresses it does get more and more serious, but the underlying humor is always present.

50-50 is able to lighten up a very serious topic. Some of my favourite parts are, when he becomes friends with a couple of old men during his chemotherapy treatments. These men quickly become smoking buddies and many hilarious lines are exchanged whilst they enjoy medicinal marijuana. I also find Seth Rogen’s character has all kinds of lines (mostly sexual) that are extremely vulgar. Most of these lines should only be seen in context so I posted a video with some of these parts. And if you haven’t seen this movie definitely go check it out as soon as possible.

School of Rock

This is a movie that is almost impossible for someone to have not seen. It is constantly played on TV, and no matter how often it is played I watch it. For some reason the idea of a strange man taking over a classroom full of children and teaching them how to rock amuses me. Jack Black is one of my favourite stars in Hollywood and his musical talents are apparent throughout the film. Black has a background in singing with his band Tenacious D. his talent shines thorough as he invades a private school using a class to form a band that he enters into a competition.

After watching this movie as I sit in math class I constantly think about the line “get off your ath and do some math”. Another classic line when Black tells the students parents at parent teacher night “I have been touched by your kids…and I’m pretty sure that I’ve touched them”. This movie is appropriate for all ages and has consistent humor that makes it an enjoyable watch. Not to mention it is full of kick ass rock music.

The first clip I posted is the trailer for the movie and the second one is the music video for Tenacious D’s song, Tribute.

Dictator, fun for the entire family

Any advocate of human rights, Democracy or Feminism should most definitely not see this movie.  From the first caption to the very end this movie was a pure Sacha Baron Choan film. It begins by dedicating the movie in loving memory of Kim Jong Il. The movie is about a different brutal dictator named Aladeen, played by Choan. The film follows the life of Aladeen as he is sent to America and must live in a democratic society. The transition for him, as you can imagine is very difficult.
Some of my favourite parts were when he delivers a baby. After bringing the new life into this world he realises it’s a girl and looks for the nearest trash can. Another classic yet morally wrong quote is when he asks his wife if she will be having a boy or an abortion.
The humor is extremely crude and I found that as I was laughing I couldn’t help but feel bad. And as I sat in the theater I realised that others felt the same way. For example, around half way through the movie I observed as a middle aged woman got up and left. To say the least she did not look impressed with the film. However, found that this lady leaving the movie extremely funny, heightening the experience of the Dictator.

Mrs.Doubfire was off the chain

Mrs. Doubtfire is a golden oldie starring Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire. This movie is chalked full irony that in turn creates comedy. Robin Williams is a fun father who has been pushing his luck for years. Finally his wife cracks and they get divorced, this means he only has a limited time every week to see his children. So he dresses up as a British Nanny that his wife in turn hires to look after the children. As you can imagine his daily routine is significantly altered. The constant problems that he faces as a crossing dressing Nanny are what spur many funny and ironic scenes. A couple of the parts that I always laugh at no matter how often I watch it are his initial make over, his famous line I have to piss like a racehorse and  when he gets stuck between character during an inspection at his house and again a restaurant. However, the best part of the movie for me is how realistic the transformation form man to old women is. Robin Williams has the impersonation of an old woman down pat. Between the voice look and demeanour, Robin William’s would fit perfectly into any retirement home.

I posted a couple of my favourite parts from this movie so be sure to watch and enjoy them.

Winners and Sinners was a Winner

A couple months ago I was introduce to a martial arts, criminal comedy. This movie is called Winners and Sinners. It is set in Hon Kong and follows the lives of 5 convicts who after prison decide to live together. They live with Curly’s (one of the convicts) sister who is very beautiful which creates plenty of friction and hilarious situations throughout the movie. At times it is somewhat difficult to follow, due to the ever-present subtitles. However, the extremely fast talking and over exaggerated expressions and movements of the actors make it all the more better. The fact that this movie has subtitles makes it difficult to pick a quote, but luckly for me, the best part of the movie has little to no talking at all. For what appears to be a low budget film Winners and Sinners blow their small sum of money that they had on one scene.  This scene is a car crash that turns into more of a car massacre. What could have been a simple 4 or maybe 5 car pileup is taken to a whole new level. Upwards of 50 cars crash, smash and fly their way across the screen for aporx 5 minutes. This scene was so over done that it became comical.

Elf

Every time someone thinks of Will Ferrell Step Brothers, Talladega Nights and Anchor man immediately come to mind. But most people forget the movie that I think is arguably his best, Elf. Elf is such a clever idea and Will Ferrell executes the character spot on.  Will Ferrell is an adopted Elf that lives and works in Santa’s workshop. Once he grows up it is painfully obvious that he does not fit in, so he runs away to the city. It turns out that the city life is very different then that in the North Pole and Elf has a very significant culture shock.
It is these culture shocks that produce nonstop laughter. Certain parts of that movie have stuck with me for years. For example when he is told that Santa is coming and he proceeds to run around the store yelling SANTA SANTA…. or when he eats the gum stuck to the bottom of the railing. And probably my favourite part when he meets the little person and is convinced he is a fellow elf. These priceless scenes made Elf a movie that in all honesty if hilarious for all ages.

Ted

When I saw the trailer for Ted I immediately knew that it was a movie that I needed to see.  I n fact I ended up going to see it opening week, it did not disappoint. This film is a classic Seth MacFarlane, with a very insignificant plot line. However where the plot lacked the comedy more than made up for.  This movie is about a man and his loyal teddy bear, Ted. However they have grown up and lost their innocence, to say the least. John played by Mark Wahlberg has a very boring life only made better by Ted and the antics the two get up to. This all changes though when John’s girlfriend wants a commitment. Ted’s life is turned upside down.
Some of lines that I found the funniest in this movie were the thunder song and when they try cocaine for the first and most likely the last time. As well, this movie looks very realistic. This CGI helps to keep it funny, interesting and most importantly realistic.

Dodging Balls

Ben stiller is known to be a part of multiple hit comedies such as Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers, Zoolander and his short yet impactful role in Anchorman. But one cannot forget one of my personal favourites, Dodge Ball. This movie was one of the very first comedies I ever saw and it has stuck with me since. The reason i watched it was because i foud the catch phrase "Grab Life By the balls" halarious. But by far the most memorable part for me is the quote “if you can dodge a car you can dodge a ball”. Every time I enjoy a game of dodge ball this quote always pops into my head. But of course the second thought would be the five D’s of dodge ball, a life lesson that every child should be taught.  The simplicity is what makes these five or four rules (depending on how you look at them) work so well “Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge”.

Napoleon Dynamite is Dynamite

To history buffs Napoleon was a crazy general but for me Napoleon is an awkward teenager in the movie Napoleon Dynamite. I will admit that the first time I watched this film I hated it. I found Napoleon obnoxious and the lack of a plot made the movie pointless to me. But at least twice a year I stumble upon it on t.v. and decide to watch it. As I watch it more and more I find myself coming to grips with the subtle and awkward humor that is Napoleon. Some of my favourite lines are “Knock it off, Napoleon! Just make yourself a dang quesa-dilluh!” and “A fringing twelve gauge, what do you think “. These two quotes provide a little insight into the humor of the movie without ruining it. The link bellow has some other great parts of the movie so check that out as well.

Some fun facts that I found interesting about this production is that Napoleon’s favourite animal the Liger is in fact a real animal. The liger is the product of a male Lion and a female Tiger but is not a magical. As well this movie only took 22 days to shoot and it was produced on a normal mac by the director, which is good since the budget for the movie was only 400 00$. However this small budget is not evident. Make

Tight Pants

I find that Will Ferrell is one of the most quotable comedians/actors out there. In the comedic song "tight pants", he does not disappoint.  Along with Jimmy Fallon a melodic master piece was formed.  The tune is extremely infectious; in fact I had this song stuck in my head for an entire week after listening to it just once.  This war for the tightest pants is jammed packed with hilarity. Will Ferrell in other such skits has never been ashamed to show the world what he has got no matter how embarrassing or shameful.  His confidence surely shines through in his somewhat provocative dance moves.

This skit is one of his best known but you can be sure I will be posting plenty more on him and his comedic genius.  A quick synopsis of the best quotes to listen for is: “don’t awake the snake” and when things really get heated “you sick son of a b****”. By the end of the song the winner of this legendary battle is apparent. But in order to find out you will have to watch the video.  I posted the link below so make sure to check it out.

Chest Waxing

Hey my name is Aaron and I have always enjoyed comedy. As a result my favourite genre of film is comedy. I have chosen for you today one of my all time top ten favourite movie quote mash ups. This single 3 minute clip has some of the funniest yet most vulger quotes one can find. These quotes such as mantastic and nipple f*** are from the film 40 Year Old Virgin. My favourite part about these quotes are that this is actually Steve Carell getting his chest waxed. Therfore his reactions and pain are all legitement.
Check it out and if you dont laugh at least five times your heart is made of stone.
